How well do you know your boiler?

How often do you think about your boiler? Probably only when a Boiler Service Essex company comes in each year to give your system a check over.

Your boiler is more complicated than you think and needs to be regularly maintained by a professional to ensure that all of the major parts are in full working order and allow for you to have a nice warm home and access to warm water whenever you want it. Now whilst it isn’t important that you become a guru in knowing your boiler, you can leave that to the professionals, there are a few key parts that you may want to know.

Essentially your boiler uses water to heat and then use to travel through your radiators and provide you with heating throughout your home or perhaps to heat your hot water. There are essentially three main parts to any boiler (the specifics may differ depending on your type and make of boiler).

Burner

This is where the reaction needed to create the heating mechanism occurs. Your burner is linked to your thermostat and when your room temperature drops below your desired level the burner will receive an amount of fuel which is sprayed and then ignited. This is what causes the reaction within the combustion chamber and allows for the heating of the water to occur.

Combustion Chamber

This is the area in which the fuel source is burnt and is the part of the boiler that becomes the hottest and can reach incredibly high temperatures in a relatively short period of time. It is for this reason that you will often find that the chambers are made from cast iron. When the heat is created within this chamber it is passed along to the heat exchanger. It is important that this area is protected and checked for any signs of damage or decay during your boilers annual service.

Heat exchanger

Here water is filtered around a chamber through a number of different pipes. The water will move from the water chamber through to the pipes that run around the house, usually underneath the floorboards, that then reappear at floor level and connect to the radiators with the property. The water then travels through these radiators to heat them and then through the pipes to the next radiator. The network of pipes and order in which the radiators receive their water is incredibly important in creating an effective heating system within your home.
