Gardeners suggest this use for packaging

In today’s world, most of us are trying to do our bit to be more sustainable in everyday activities. Whether that’s walking instead of taking the car, avoiding food waste or recycling, every bit helps.

Everyday Items

But did you know there are uses for everyday objects in the garden? Cardboard, wood and even wine bottle corks can be really useful in the garden.

Since gardening itself can be a healthy, mindful activity, let’s take a look at how we can repurpose items that would otherwise have been thrown away.

Cardboard

Most of us have lots of cardboard lying around – it’s often used to protect packages in transit. Cardboard packaging, such as that sold by experts like capscases.co.uk/services-2/sustainable-cardboard-packaging/, is a sustainable, plastic-free material.

This cardboard can make an excellent, eco-friendly planter for your garden. This is mostly thanks to the fact that cardboard is actually biodegradable. Whether your garden is full of plants, or you’re a keen vegetable grower, cardboard can be used to house compost, seeds and plants, and will simply rot down into the ground afterwards.

If the cardboard you have available isn’t the right shape or size, simply soak the cardboard until it’s flexible, then shape it around empty jars or tins, scrunching the base to make the correct container size, and allow it to dry hard.

This avoids the use of plastic, and arguably it’s better for the plants, too. Gardeners can simply place the whole cardboard planter, and its contents, into the soil, without any need to disturb the roots.
