What’s it Like Working on the Motorways?
The motorways of the UK are well used and busy stretches of road – from the commuters heading into London on the M1 to holidaymakers heading into the Southwest on the M5, these roads need to be made safe and kept well maintained for all the traffic that uses them, as they are also a vital part of the infrastructure of the UK.
In order to do this, people are needed to work on these roads to keep them in good condition – this is a job that is physically demanding and also potentially dangerous, as a lot of motorway work is carried out at times when the traffic is still using the motorway, although sometimes it is necessary to close the motorway entirely.
The vehicles that are used for this type of work use chevron kits to help them to be seen by other motorists and to keep the users safe and the workers will also be wearing hi viz reflective clothing to help make them as visible as possible, especially since a lot of motorway work is done at night to minimise the disruption to traffic.
Although this is a job that can be strenuous and dangerous, it also suits many people. Working around the country and travelling from place to place means that it rarely gets boring and there are a wide range of tasks and skills required to do the job, as well as the potential to progress and learn new skills.
