Getting Your Bedroom Ready for the Future of Technology

Some technology in the bedroom is just blatantly a good idea – better lighting, easier charging, and smarter heating are all very welcome bedfellows… if it’s implemented properly.

Future-proofing is not about finding a place for all of the gadgets in a room. It’s about considering if your bedroom is designed with the necessary power and connectivity and spatial layout so that tech can be added (or changed) later on without tearing everything out.

1. Locate power where it makes sense

Many bedrooms get by with the above along one side of a bed with an extension lead sneaking out from behind a bedside table. If you renovate, go ahead and level up. For Bedroom Renovations, visit thekitchenrefurbishmentcompany.co.uk/bedroom-renovations/

Install sockets on both sides of the bed (even if you are sleeping alone at the moment)

USB-C charging or space for plug-in chargers included

More than a bed: include outlets for your vanity, or desk chair, and your TV, air purifier or heated blanket, for example.

  1. Figure out your Wi-Fi and data early

All connected devices rest on the quality of the connection.

Bring the router a bit closer to be safe; if it has trouble, think about moving your router to a better location.

For the best setup, you can get wired Ethernet to a desk or TV point (great for streaming).

When renovating walls, inquire about conduit (a straightforward cable route) that will service for new cables to run down the line.

  1. Smart lighting

By far the easiest way to incorporate tech into a space without making it seem smarthomey is through lighting.

Add dimmable warm bulbs in the evening.

Install reading lights near the bed so that you can read without using a bright ceiling light.

Opt for two-way switching for convenience.

If you love your smart lighting, choose products that are still capable of working with a regular switch.

  1. Consider comfort tech

Future-proofing can also mean future comfort upgrades:

Programmable smart heating controls or thermostatic radiator valves for more precise temperature control.

Dehumidifier or air purifier, if you need this for condensation or allergies, placed somewhere out of the way.

Upgrades like acoustic (underlay and carpets) or heavy curtains that completely block out light, draught proofing to reduce noise levels at night, etc., are things tech can’t really fix for poor sleepers!

  1. Organise your cables and keep them clean

Cables aren’t an afterthought with tech:

Select nightstands with cable cut-outs or secret drawers.

Design wardrobe lighting and hidden power sockets for charging your devices.

When it comes to future-proofing your bedroom, flexibility is key. Sort the wiring, connectivity, and lighting first, then you can easily update your tech in the future.
