Six Essential Macrame Tools
Once you have decided that you want to take up macrame, one of your first questions is likely to be what tools you will need. Whilst cord is obviously essential, there are a few other simple pieces of equipment that could make the experience easier.
Cord
Macrame means “knot” and every macrame kit from somewhere like /www.woolcouturecompany.com/collections/macrame-kits will include cords, regardless of other tools. The core of macrame will always be knotting these cords, which come in different colours and thicknesses.
Tape Measure
Once you have your cord, you will need to make sure that it is the right length. If you plan to hang the finished piece on your wall, you may also need to measure the intended area. In both of these situations, a tape measure is a simple but invaluable piece of equipment.
Metal Comb
Fringes and feathers can easily become tangled, in which case you will need a comb to tidy them. Steel is much more effective than plastic. A pet comb can work as well as a human one, but make sure it is just dedicated to macrame and is not full of hair!
Scissors
You do not want to use the same pair of scissors for macrame that you do when you are in the kitchen handling food preparation. Have a dedicated pair sharp enough to sever your macrame cords when needed, and to help when shaping accessories such as feathers.
S Hook
The S hook is a small piece of curved metal in an “S” shape that can be attached to your piece of macrame, or indeed other types of craft, to make them easier to hang and display when they are finished.
Wooden Dowel
When your piece is complete you may want to hang it on your wall. A wooden dowel, or even a piece of tree branch, is a clean and naturalistic way to do it. You can scavenge wood from a forest or beach.
Some of these tools are more important than others. But all of them will help you produce and display your new macrame creation.
